Oxford Urban Wildlife Group (OUWG) are offering an afternoon of free nature focused events 3 to 5pm, Saturday 10th June 2023, for people of all ages to celebrate the Oxford Preservation Trust Award (OPT) for their Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment (TOE) funded Ponds, Glades and Woodlands Conservation project to share the beauty of the nature reserve.

The TOE funded project enabled this this East Oxford wildlife group to restore freshwater habitats, increase woodland groundflora diversity, restore natural wildlife habitats and create all weather accessible paths on the reserve, where such protected species such as the brown hairstreak butterfly Thecla betulae and the slow worm Anguis fragilis reside. The nature reserve received the OPT award in the Landscape and Public Realm category.

A Connecting in Nature project funded by the Community Fund has run in parallel to help local people connect in nature and enjoy the restored benefits of the secret wildlife oasis. This included free weekend Forest School for families in local communities, the provision of surveying equipment for volunteers and the creation of new interpretation materials. OUWG have developed a range of regular opportunities for people get involved in conservation work, species surveying and connect with the reserve such as a new bird hide created from materials sourced on site with a living roof, art in nature sessions, bird, butterfly and bat walks, singing in nature which can be enjoyed during the open afternoon.
